Error code

ICE on a hot tub:
it is protecting itself.

This one is usually not a fault at all. The tub has detected a low temperature and is circulating water so the plumbing does not freeze. In a Michigan January that is the system working.

What ICE means

ICE — ICU on some control packs — means freeze protection has kicked in. The tub has read a low temperature and started running the pumps to keep water moving through the plumbing. Moving water is much harder to freeze than standing water, so this is a protective routine, not a breakdown.

In January in Southeast Michigan, seeing ICE during a cold night is the tub behaving exactly as designed. Most owners who call about it are relieved to hear that.

When ICE is worth a phone call

  • The water is genuinely warm and ICE is showing anyway. That points at a temperature sensor reading low — a real fault, and one you want found before deep winter. Related codes are SN1 and SN3 .
  • It is running freeze protection constantly for days. Pumps running around the clock is not free, and something is keeping the tub from reaching temperature. Often that is a heating fault hiding behind a protective routine.
  • The tub is cold and ICE never appeared. This is the dangerous one. Freeze protection that should have triggered and did not means the plumbing has no protection at all.

The bigger winter question

Freeze protection only works while the tub has power. That is the whole caveat, and it is the reason a hot tub in a Michigan winter is really a question about outages rather than about codes.

A full tub that loses power in a hard freeze is on a clock measured in hours, not days. When the water in the plumbing freezes it expands and splits whatever contains it: a union, a fitting, a heater manifold, or the wet end of a pump. That repair is several times the cost of the inconvenience that caused it. If you are away from the property for a stretch, the two honest options are to keep it running with somebody checking on it, or to have it properly drained and winterised. We cover this in more detail on our Pinckney and Hamburg and Fenton pages, where wooded lots and second homes make it a live issue every winter.

After a freeze

  • Look for water in the equipment bay before you power anything up.
  • If a pump runs but moves nothing, switch it off. Running a pump dry turns one repair into two.
  • Do not keep cycling a tub throwing errors after a freeze. Call and describe it.

Where we stop

Electrical work on a spa circuit is licensed work in Michigan and Dr. Spa does not do it. After an outage the fault is sometimes on the circuit rather than in the tub, and we will tell you plainly which one you have.

Related codes

COOL and COL and FLO are the ones that most often appear alongside a cold tub. The full error code index covers all twelve.
